Bacteriocins of gram-positive bacteria.
In recent years, a group of antibacterial proteins produced by gram-positive bacteria have attracted great interest in their potential use as food preservatives and as antibacterial agents to combat certain infections due to gram-positive pathogenic bacteria. They are ribosomally synthesized peptides of 30 to less than 60 amino acids, with a narrow to wide antibacterial spectrum against gram-po...
متن کاملMethods for distinguishing gram-positive from gram-negative bacteria.
Lysis by KOH and hydrolysis of L-alanine-4-nitroanilide were compared with the Gram reaction of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria. Both tests correlated well with the Gram reaction with nonfermentative bacilli and Bacillus species, whereas they did not correlate with nonsporulating anaerobes. Only campylobacteria were KOH positive and L-alanine-4-nitroanilide and gram negative.
متن کاملNew thermosensitive plasmid for gram-positive bacteria.
We isolated a replication-thermosensitive mutant of the broad-host-range replicon pWV01. The mutant pVE6002 is fully thermosensitive above 35 degrees C in both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Four clustered mutations were identified in the gene encoding the replication protein of pVE6002. The thermosensitive derivative of the related plasmid pE194 carries a mutation in the analogous r...
متن کاملHyaluronidases of Gram-positive bacteria.
Bacterial hyaluronidases, enzymes capable of breaking down hyaluronate, are produced by a number of pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria that initiate infections at the skin or mucosal surfaces. Since reports of the hyaluronidases first appeared, there have been numerous suggestions as to the role of the enzyme in the disease process. Unlike some of the other more well studied virulence factors, m...
متن کاملUse of cephalexin-aztreonam-arabinose agar for selective isolation of Enterococcus faecium.
Cephalexin-aztreonam-arabinose agar (CAA), a new selective agar, was examined in comparison with nalidixic acid-colistin agar for the differentiation of Enterococcus faecium from other enterococci and the ability to isolate the organism from feces. Two hundred sixteen enterococcus isolates and a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative control strains were inoculated onto both media. All cont...
